Did Jesus really claim to be God in the flesh?
Yes. This little compilation of texts from the Bible is not meant to be exhaustive. There are many more. However, we did want to show how overwhelming the evidence is regarding Jesus’ claims to deity.
Direct references to the Deity of Jesus Christ:
The coming Messiah referred to as God
Isaiah 9:6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
(This is a prophecy in the Old Testament of the coming Messiah.)
Matthew 1:23 “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel,” which means, God with us.
John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
John 1:18 No one has ever seen God; the only God (i.e. Jesus), who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known.
John 10:30-31 “I and the Father are one.” The Jews picked up stones again to stone him.
(The Jews knew what he was claiming. They did not believe him. If this statement was not true, then according to their laws at that time, stoning this blasphemer was exactly what they should have done.)
John 20:28 Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!”
(Jesus does not rebuke Thomas for this statement. Thomas calls him Lord and God and Jesus receives that worship as if it were appropriate. Either Jesus is a megalomaniac or “doubting” Thomas’ response to seeing the scars from his pierced hands and side after the resurrection is the proper response.)
Romans 9:5 To them belong the patriarchs, and from their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ who is God over all, blessed forever. Amen.
(Here the Messiah, the Christ, is referred to as God over all. A clear reference to the Deity of Jesus.)
Titus 2:11-13 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ,
Hebrews 1:8 But of the Son He says, “YOUR THRONE, O GOD, IS FOREVER AND EVER, AND THE RIGHTEOUS SCEPTER IS THE SCEPTER OF HIS KINGDOM.
2 Peter 1:1 Simon Peter, a bond-servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who have received a faith of the same kind as ours, by the righteousness of our God and Savior, Jesus Christ:
Christ referred to as Lord
Luke 2:11 for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.
Matthew 3:3 For this is the one referred to by Isaiah the prophet when he said, “THE VOICE OF ONE CRYING IN THE WILDERNESS, ’MAKE READY THE WAY OF THE LORD, MAKE HIS PATHS STRAIGHT!”’
(This statement that John the Baptist made concerning Jesus is a quotation of Isaiah 40:3, which is a statement referring to God Himself: “A voice is calling, ’Clear the way for the LORD in the wilderness; Make smooth in the desert a highway for our God.’”)
Matthew 22:42 “What do you think about the Christ, whose son is He?” They said to Him, “The son of David.” 43 He said to them, “Then how does David in the Spirit call Him ’Lord,’ saying, 44 ’THE LORD SAID TO MY LORD, “SIT AT MY RIGHT HAND, UNTIL I PUT YOUR ENEMIES BENEATH YOUR FEET”’? 45 “If David then calls Him ’Lord,’ how is He his son?” (see Psalm 110)
1 Corinthians 8:6 yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom are all things and we exist for Him; and one Lord, Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we exist through Him.
Revelation 19:16 And on His robe and on His thigh He has a name written, “KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.” (This is a title reserved for God alone in the Old Testament.)
The “I am” statements in John
John 8:57 So the Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?” 58 Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am. 59 Therefore they picked up stones to throw at Him, but Jesus hid Himself and went out of the temple.”
(This statement is a clear allusion to God’s self-disclosure to Moses back in Exodus 3:14, “God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM”; and He said, “Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, ’I AM has sent me to you.”’)
John 13:19 “From now on I am telling you before it comes to pass, so that when it does occur, you may believe that I am He.
Isaiah 43:9 All the nations have gathered together So that the peoples may be assembled. Who among them can declare this And proclaim to us the former things? Let them present their witnesses that they may be justified, Or let them hear and say, “It is true.” 10 “You are My witnesses,” declares the LORD, “And My servant whom I have chosen, So that you may know and believe Me And understand that I am He. Before Me there was no God formed, And there will be none after Me. 11 “I, even I, am the LORD, And there is no savior besides Me. 12 “It is I who have declared and saved and proclaimed, And there was no strange god among you; So you are My witnesses,” declares the LORD, “And I am God. 13 “Even from eternity I am He, And there is none who can deliver out of My hand; I act and who can reverse it?”
THE Son of Man
Matthew 9:6 “But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins” — then He said to the paralytic, “Get up, pick up your bed and go home.” (Only God has the right and ability to forgive sins.)
Matthew 12:8 “For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.” (This would have been a shocking statement to a first-century Jew. It would clearly be either the height of hubris or an affirmation of deity.)
Matthew 19:28 And Jesus said to them, “Truly I say to you, that you who have followed Me, in the regeneration when the Son of Man will sit on His glorious throne, you also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
Matthew 24:27 “For just as the lightning comes from the east and flashes even to the west, so will the coming of the Son of Man be.
Matthew 24:30 And then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the SON OF MAN COMING ON THE CLOUDS OF THE SKY with power and great glory.
Daniel 7:13 “I kept looking in the night visions, And behold, with the clouds of heaven One like a Son of Man was coming, And He came up to the Ancient of Days And was presented before Him. 14 “And to Him was given dominion, Glory and a kingdom, That all the peoples, nations and men of every language Might serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion Which will not pass away; And His kingdom is one Which will not be destroyed.
Jesus is worshipped
Matthew 2:2 “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him.” … 11 After coming into the house they saw the Child with Mary His mother; and they fell to the ground and worshiped Him. Then, opening their treasures, they presented to Him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
Luke 24:52 And they, after worshiping Him, returned to Jerusalem with great joy,
John 9:38 And he said, “Lord, I believe.” And he worshiped Him.
Hebrews 1:6 And when He again brings the firstborn into the world, He says, “AND LET ALL THE ANGELS OF GOD WORSHIP HIM.”
Revelation 5:8 When He had taken the book, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb (i.e. Jesus Christ), each one holding a harp and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. 9 And they sang a new song, saying, ” Worthy are You to take the book and to break its seals; for You were slain, and purchased for God with Your blood men from every tribe and tongue and people and nation. 10 ” You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to our God; and they will reign upon the earth.” 11 Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne and the living creatures and the elders; and the number of them was myriads of myriads, and thousands of thousands, 12 saying with a loud voice, “Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing.” 13 And every created thing which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all things in them, I heard saying, ” To Him who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb, be blessing and honor and glory and dominion forever and ever.” 14 And the four living creatures kept saying, “Amen.” And the elders fell down and worshiped.
John 20:28 Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!”
Other direct references:
John 5:17 But He answered them, “My Father is working until now, and I Myself am working.” 18 For this reason therefore the Jews were seeking all the more to kill Him, because He not only was breaking the Sabbath, but also was calling God His own Father, making Himself equal with God.
John 14:9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been so long with you, and yet you have not come to know Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; how can you say, ’Show us the Father’?
Philippians 2:9 For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus EVERY KNEE WILL BOW, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Isaiah 45:22 “Turn to Me and be saved, all the ends of the earth; For I am God, and there is no other. 23 “I have sworn by Myself, The word has gone forth from My mouth in righteousness And will not turn back, That to Me every knee will bow, every tongue will swear allegiance.
Hebrews 1:3 And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,
Revelation 1:17 When I saw Him, I fell at His feet like a dead man. And He placed His right hand on me, saying, “Do not be afraid; I am the first and the last, (Cf. Rev. 22:13)
Isaiah 44:6 “Thus says the LORD, the King of Israel And his Redeemer, the LORD of hosts: ’I am the first and I am the last, And there is no God besides Me.
Revelation 1:8 “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.”
Revelation 22:13 “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.”…16 “I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you these things for the churches. I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star.”
Indirect (or incidental) references:
Luke 13:34 “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, just as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you would not have it!
Luke 14:25 Now large crowds were going along with Him; and He turned and said to them, 26 “If anyone comes to Me, and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple. 27 “Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple.
Matthew 10:37 “He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me; and he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. 38 “And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me.
(Isn’t He calling us to become idolaters if He is not God?)
Proverbs 27:2 Let another praise you, and not your own mouth; A stranger, and not your own lips.
Proverbs 25:27 It is not good to eat much honey, Nor is it glory to search out one’s own glory.
(We know this intuitively. When people ring their own praises, it is repulsive - even if their praises are true. God is the only being for whom self-exaltation is virtuous. )
Matthew 12:6 “But I say to you that something greater than the temple is here.
Matthew 12:42 ” The Queen of the South will rise up with this generation at the judgment and will condemn it, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and behold, something greater than Solomon is here.
John 11:25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies,
John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.
(Just a few examples - is He a model of humility? How can He say these things and say He is gentle and humble in heart?)
Lewis quote:
“Christ says that He is ‘humble and meek’ and we believe Him; not noticing that, if He were merely a man, humility and meekness are the very last characteristics we could attribute to some of His sayings.
I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him: ‘I’m ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept His claim to be God.’ That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic - on a level with the man who says he is a poached egg - or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God: or else a madman or something worse. You can shut Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon; or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.”
‘The Shocking Alternative” in Mere Christianity
John 5:26 “For just as the Father has life in Himself, even so He gave to the Son also to have life in Himself;
John 14:23 Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our abode with him.
1 Corinthians 2:2 For I determined to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and Him crucified.
“Not to know anything among them save Jesus Christ? Behold an inspired teacher of religion, passing from city to city, from church to church, determined to know but one thing, as it were; teach but one thing; publish, commend, enforce, glory in one thing - a creature? O frightful thought, and contradiction in the very terms!” - from The Divine Glory of Christ by Charles Brown
From The Divine Glory of Christ by Charles Brown
“…if it be possible for God to delegate, and if he have actually delegated, to any mere creature, all that he has - names, perfections, works, worship, glory, with all claims to the supreme affection, homage, love, fear of our innermost hearts - then there is an end at once, and for ever, to the divine Unity, and especially in any such peculiar manner of it as we have seen; and Jesus Christ stands forth another and second God, and the chief rival and adversary on earth of the I AM, of the blessed and only Potentate, only good, only holy, only wise, who only has immortality, who only does wondrous things, of whom, and through whom, and to whom, are all things.”
