Whom do you reflect?
Human beings tend to become like those they admire. Just think of the way young baseball players mimic the swing of their favorite player. Or think of the way that young singers imitate the voice of their favorite singer.
We resemble whom we respect. We tend to become like whom we admire.
A guy named Henry Scougal once said, “The worth and excellency of a soul is to be measured by the object of its love.” Think of what and whom you love. How worthy or excellent is your soul? If your loves are food or drink or drugs or sex or video games or cutting-edge gadgets or TV or movies, etc., your soul will begin to shrink down to the worth of that object.
How much is GOD worth? Think about this question. How could any created thing be more excellent and worthy than the Creator? What can any of these things do for you on your deathbed? Thinking about this question is one way to expose the worthlessness of these objects.
We were created in God’s image to reflect His worth and excellence. We’ve all rebelled against that original purpose. We all are slaves worshiping and serving the created things rather than the Creator. We’ve all submitted to this soul-shriveling slavery. And God’s wrath is coming on account of our foolishness and arrogance – because to set your affections on these unworthy objects tells the ultimate lie – that they are more excellent and worthy than He. Buying that lie belittles God’s worth and it shrivels our souls.
Thankfully, God did not leave us to shrivel into oblivion. He sent His Son, God in human flesh, to free us from the slavery of worthless idols. Jesus Christ is the only One who can set you free.
The freedom that comes with trusting Him (i.e. admiring Him and respecting Him and treasuring Him above all else) is the freedom that leads us back to our original purpose – to reflect His worth and excellence by being transformed into His likeness.
Whom you reflect is inescapably linked to whom you respect.
